Open Ocean Robotics participated in a project to determine the utility of autonomous vehicles in combatting illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
The goal of the MPAbots Swimoff Challenge was to determine if remote technology solutions could fill the gap in terms of both illegal activity detection and response. Several technology partners, NGOs, and government advisors worked together to answer important questions around the role of technology for enforcement and to determine if remotely gathered information on illegal activity is robust enough for successful prosecution in an administrative, civil, or criminal proceeding.
